Work / Cypress Hill and The London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall

The Brief

Back in 1996, The Simpsons joked that Cypress Hill had accidentally booked a gig with the London Symphony Orchestra while under the influence. Nearly 30 years on, the unlikely collaboration finally became a reality as the two came together for a historic performance at the Royal Albert Hall.

Working with the show’s promoter, AEG, our objective was to highlight the story around this legendary moment to press, ensuring the show was a sell-out event and cementing its place in cultural history.

What We Did

A good story is key to any PR campaign, and this concert provided us with one of the best. The Simpsons connection provided a perfect popular culture crossover moment for music and entertainment journalists to get their teeth into.

LD managed the initial announcement of the show, which gained huge traction in the US and UK and led to tickets selling out in a matter of minutes.

Closer to the event, we organised a press junket for Cypress Hill with BBC, Sky News, ITV London and PA Media. With these interviews out, the story had a huge impact across broadcast, print and online media. From The Guardian to The Huffington Post, the news spread like wildfire. Reviews were then secured from the likes of The New York Times and Daily Telegraph, giving unanimous praise to the performance and helping to reinforce its credibility. On the day of the show, it was the most read story on the BBC website with millions of hits.

Ultimately, the story was there to be told. By sharing it strategically with the right contacts and creating ‘moments’ in the campaign, it gained a life of its own and became a leading global news story, helping to cement it as a historic moment in popular culture.
